Movie Reviews

I pretty much go to the movies every week so I thought I'd go ahead and create a movie review thread. The DVD review thread would probably cover the extras and production quality anyway. I just want to talk about things like writing, cinematography, directing, acting, etc. So here's the thread Fred.

If you don't mind, please format your movie reviews by placing the title of the movie reviewed in the subject line and include the date you saw it in the message. Makes organizing and reading the reviews easier.

Thumbs up Shaun of the Dead

Viewed: 10-05-04

Synopsis: Shaun (an electronics salesman), his roommate, his girlfriend, her friends and his mom deal with a zombie filled North London.

Review: This movie was absolutely hilarious on several levels. I love the statement they make by showing how folks at the beginning of the film are just kind of mindlessly going through life as zombies anyway, so that when it actually does happen Shaun doesn't immediately notice. For someone who enjoys Brit-coms and can follow a cockney accent and who loves zombie flicks. Great jokes (love the inside star wars jokes too), great effects, cool music, great flick. If you want to have a fun time at the movies then get liquored up (but not so much that you miss stuff) and check this one out!

Exclamation The Grudge

Viewed: 10-24-04

Synopsis: Japanese and Americans are sucked in by a Japanese "Grudge" haunting.

Review: Well, I wish I could tell you this was as good as the Ring (being someone who is aware there is a Japanese original Ringu), but it wasn't. The effects were very similar. Like everything Japanese, it's copied from someone else and tweaked. Just like most anime looks like anime with artists having their subtle differences, so it was with the Grudge in comparison with The Ring. The main difference here being that it was directed by a Japanese, set in Japan with mainly American actors. Looks like the Raimi family (Evil Dead, Spiderman, Xena, Hercules, etc.) went nuts after they saw The Ring and wanted to do get involved with something similar.

Like I said, good effects...may give you the creeps, but it lacked in story, momentum, some poor acting and it kind of leaves you hanging.

Unhappy Ocean's Twelve

Viewed: 12-10-04

Synopsis: Terry Benedict gets revenge on Ocean's eleven.

Review: The film follows a similar formula to the first one with flashbacks at the end that explain some loose ends. Some funny jokes that carry over from the first film with some new ones. We get introduced to some new characters that were hinted at in the first film as well.

Fun story, but to me not as fun as the first one. Wait for the dollar theatre.

Thumbs down Amityville Horror (2005)

Viewed: 04-16-05

Synopsis: Family moves into a house once owned by a guy went crazy and murdered his family only to make the new guy go crazy and try to murder his family.

Review: Usual new hollywood formula. Take advantage of a classic title to make money and fill it with a bunch of "boo" scares and creepy kids who see dead people. Note to hollywood: The Sixth Sense wasn't THAT great. You're better off renting the original, or better yet, take a trip to the library and research the REAL story (now that's entertainment).

Horrible. The only redeeming quality is the absolutely SMOKING babysitter; I've never sprung cat-scratchable wood in a theater until now.
