so... does anybody here have existing political ambitions? I would take the time to vote for somebody with a good drug policy reform platform. I read that the governor of New Mexico is big on decriminalization.

Bottom line is that the government will lose money if it is decriminalized. They are making a lot with it being illegal, they get money for arrests, incarcerations, etc... this is a big money game. As long as there are greedy politicians, drugs will always be illegal. It does not matter how beneficial they could prove to be.

With legalization I see it completely different: the government throws a 200% tax on this stuff and say they're the only people that can sell it on top of that. I have a hard time believing they couldn't make some serious cash from drugs if legalized. Also, I think that drugs should be legalized not because some people feel they are beneficial, or that they could make the government money, but because the gov. should not have any right to make it illegal. I'm sure that now there are laws that give the government powers in this area, and I think they should be repealed. After that, you don't even need to pass legalization laws, the government has no powers to declare it illegal. It would be nice if I had some real facts. This is a bunch of speculation, I wanted to share my viewpoint and hopefully somebody that knows more facts will come back and tell me how they see the situation. |

There's an article in newest playboy about what they started to do in England. I think only in some places they don't arrest you at all (takes 3 hours time and 14000$ to prosecute). They just tell you to stop and take your stuff if anything. Effectiveness of police against hard drugs went up 20% in no time. The new policy is hard to argue against.

i must say... if you don't believe the government has a right to declare drugs and their use illegal, why would you advocate giving them the right to tax drugs, and to make it illegal for non-government entities to sell them? to me, such a proposition just seems hypocritical, not to offend any-one. oh, and since this thread concerns 'religion,' i'll mention here that, though agnostic, my religious rituals involve the consumption of food, alcohol, and tobacco. some people say we would not be here with-out god, but i say 'where would we be with-out food, alcohol, and tobacco?' 'eat, drink, and be fat and drunk.' |

I'm sure things like marijuana are good for medical purposes, but I doubt meth would do anything but suck out your soul. I think people can choose for themselves as adults, and that the law should cover selling drugs to minors, and those under 21. I read that once you reach about 21, your brain is mostly done developing and if you're gonna drink or whatnot, it's based to wait until around then so you don't end up with a fucked up mind. I personally have no plans on anything stronger than some booze, and even that will be once in a blue moon, if at all. I prefer coffee.
