I'm a big Sony Fan. I have a Cybershot DSC-P72. I've looked into a lot of cameras in that range. The DSC-H1 looks pretty cool, and has some good features. I think it's down to 399-499. There's the DSC-R1 which looks like it's a bit more of a step-up. Then there's the DSC-F828 which looks really nice as well.

the dsc r1 is a pretty awesome camera. ive been using it for about half a year and havent experienced any problems. quality is also great with 10 megapixels. i think there's been a price drop recently too.

I am a Sony fan as well and I too wanted to make the move to SLR. Recently I picked up the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 and I have been really happy with it. You can get a base camera with no lens for around $650.00 / $699.00. The lens I started with was about $400.00, but you don't have to spend that much. Another nice thing about this camera is that Sony worked out some sort of deal with Minolta before they went away, so this camera is basically a Minolta with Sony's features and Sony's money behind it for development. You can also buy older Minolta Lenses off of Ebay or around town that are cheaper than Sony brand lenses. But beware of aftermarket lenses not made by Sony or Konica/Minolta, they tend to be shitty and while some are cheap, some of the end results with the photos are just awful. Another nice thing about this camera is the battery life, if you leave it powered on, whether intentionally or not it will turn itself off and when it detects major movement it will turn itself back on. It not only conserves the battery it has a great battery life, I have had this camera a little over a month, taken so many pictures that my counter flipped (over 10,000 photos) and I have charged it only 3/4 times, once because it needed it, the other times just to top it off.
The only downside or complaint that I have about this camera is that Sony did continue Minolta's legacy with their goofy-ass-non-standard hot shoe. But for $30.00 I picked up Minolta's shoe converter from a local shop. If this interests you, with a base camera and following the Ebay link you could get this SLR for about the price you are looking to spend. If you want to pick up the camera locally I will refer you to a local that will get it cheaper than bestbuy or any other huge chain... drop me a line. Sony / Minolta lens comparison chart. This guy sells and ships cheap OEM Sony len's from Japan.
