Cyclone Diwa Went Away

The US has tornadoes, Mauritius has cyclones in summer (anti-cyclones in winter). The US has the nuclear bomb but Mauritius has the baddest evil-looking chili paste in the world!

I spent the whole night on the Internet (chatting with one-minute IRC friends, surfing to Ajaxed websites and checking camwhores emails, the usual stuff) while cyclone Diwa continued to blow jobs harsh winds and pour heavy rain over the island. As I'm not an informed bloke as far as local and world news are concerned (I can't digest meals when I see dead people on tv news) I only learned of Diwa's existence since Friday, via my mother who cautioned not to attend karate class in this unwelcoming weather. Needless to say that I did attend class; there was only a handful of absentees. Only on public holidays is the dojo closed, and personally even if hell broke loose that wouldn't be a deterrent to close it down. Au contraire.

Diwa was hitting a class 1 warning on Friday; cyclone warnings range from class 1 to 4, with 4 reserved for the most badass ones (a cyclone needs to have gusts of atleast 120Km/hour to qualify as such). I've seen American Idol participants that could qualify as class 4 cyclones btw. Anyway, around 02 15 AM tonight (that is at the time of writing and GMT+4) I googled for "cyclone diwa mauritius" and was surprised to find a Wikipedia entry as the top query answer. It's as strange as finding a naked picture of Condolizza Rice link in a p2p search for Dirty Dancing. The entry, a current event document as stated, explains that a cyclone warning of class 2 concerning Diwa was in force in Mauritius. Wow, talking about being up to date! The news was some hours outdated in fact as Diwa has now ceased to be a threat (IRC is a great source for news propagation) as I was confirming it minutes later on the Mauritius Meteorological Services's website. Nevertheless I was quite impressed on reading that kind of information off Wikipedia.

And if you're wondering how cyclones get weird names then note that it's the local cyclone advisory centre's fault, in this case the Mauritius Meteorological Services. A pre-defined list is rolled out each year and since cyclones are females then you won't find any bloke's name. I guess someone did associate women's temper to cyclonic conditions, which wouldn't be totally untrue. No girlfriend? Have a cyclone, it'll blow you away!
