Rate ISPs in SLC and ISPs with service in SLC

xmission is my qwest dsl line's internet provider. My ratings:

Flexibility (custom shit): 10/10
I have an IP block for my network. They let me run my own reverse DNS server, with that crazy classless delegation stuff.

Reliability: 8/10
They've had some router problems, but they will tell you exactly what is going on when something is not working. I'm sure they'll get it worked out, they have some pretty smart people and the company seems willing to put the effort into making it right. I'm sure given a bit more time they will approach 9-10/10 reliability.

Price: 7/10
I give them 7/10, because I pay extra money for my IP block, and extra money when I download over 12GB/month (pretty much always). I believe an extra 4GB/mo up and down is $10. Their base price is awesome, so they could be a 9/10, based on your usage.

Customer Service/Tech Support: 10/10
I never wait on hold. I'm pretty sure it's 24/7. The first line techs know how to do a lot of shit. I have had issues with the setup of my service in the past, and they have never bullshitted me. This is really all I ask for.

Speed: 10/10
My internet access speed is only limited by how fast qwest configures my dsl line to run. This is approx 80KB/s down, 30KB/s up. 80KB/s*8=640Kb/s, 30KB/s*8=240Kb/s. Notice how close that is to the qwest line configuration of 640/256.

I'd like to see anybody with a local colocate rate their provider. Also, other ISPs serving qwest dsl customers, ISPs serving covad DSL customers, ATTBI, Sprint Broadband, other dsl providers?

Modem users, go back to 1980.

Edit: I haven't noticed any downtime in the 6+ months since this was posted.

I just wanted to take a moment to say that if you are with Qwest for DSL or dialup services I am sorry for you. Really... I pity you. They are a PoS company, I have had nothing but bad experiences with them.

AT&T, despite many flaws, is not too terrible. They will credit your account, and most of the time they will fix any problems you come across. For home use (keep the hell away from them if you are running a server off the line, obviously) they are a good choice.

att&t bi service has been good for me. Fast resliable.

Their accounting and customer service in the other hand, will be the first ones I put against the wall when the revolution comes.

I currently have QWEST DSL with Aros.net as my ISP. Reliabilty with Qwest is always a mixed bag. When I had them as my ISP, they had me so angry that I considered switching to cable a few times. Aros has been pretty good. Their support is kind of weak because if something goes down after 7pm, you'll have to wait until morning to call them. This is a big T/S no-no when dealing with product that is used 24/7. Service should be available 24/7 as well. Even if just to report an outage. Otherwise they have been friendly and knowledgable.

I tried out cable from AT&T about a year ago and I had constant problems with packet loss. When gaming this is a bad thing (tm).

After about 3 months of consistent traceable packet loss and going through about 20 hours of tech support to try to fix the issue, I gave up and switched back to DSL. I had to beg Qwest to take me back without any extra fees and they were nice about it. When you're the only person on your node, AT&T doesn't give a shit about the problems you have. Their motto is: "If it's only happening to one person, it's not a big deal"...

That'll teach me to live on the cutting edge of broadband.

If only I could get important enough at work to warrant a T1... Wait! I could just run coax from Draper to Downtown with about 35 repeaters and I'd be fine! :|

I use Aros/Qwest DSL. I rarely, if ever have problems with anything. I've been with Aros for years and years and they have always been nice and cool to me. Plus there are quite a few VERY hot women working there. I don't know how that would make your internet service better but I figured it was worth mentioning.
Now I have gone on HUGE 30 Gig download sprees off and on and I've never heard a peep from Aros. So maybe they just look for really heavy abusers or something.

I cannot say anything bad about Xmission, either, they are a good choice.

Talking Qwest vs. ATT

I have ATT cable access right now and they are all right. I get excellent service over the phone and excellent download speeds. My only bitch is that sometimes my connection likes to time out in the middle of the night during critical large downloads. I have never heard anything good about qwest but I have never used them so I can't say for myself.

I'm running the same XMission/Qwest DSL setup as adept for two years with no substantial problems.

My local loop or in-house wiring is a bit flaky, so i get disconnected on occasion and online gaming gets disrupted occasionally, but it's easy to live with.

the lat time i was living in SLC i was using Legacy internet services, they were a more family oriented service. I never had problems connecting, and they also actually gave classes on the internet, FTP, webdesign etc. which was below me but still a nice bonus for most. there prices were reasonable(15$ unlimited). they were even fairly nice about my webhosting when i reached my maximum alotment they gave me more space for free. especially considering the fact that i had some hacking content on the page. anyway, i found it to be a very customer oriented ISP, i even traded one of there techs a copy of Win98 for photoshop. (i dont even know if they still exist, lol)

My current ISP is ATTBI.com i have been with them for 6 months and have yet to find any major problems. my speeds are fantastic, infact the last time a tech came out (blackout caused my modem to shutdown started up an hour before tech arrived, go figure) i was told that i had some of the best speeds hes ever seen.

i pay about 40$ a month for 1500 up 250 down

speed results from broadbandreports.com:

2003-01-13 07:25:09 EST: 1730 / 245
Your download speed : 1730584 bps, or 1730 kbps.
A 211.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 245878 bps, or 145 kbps.

my gateway ping is:

Ping statistics for 63.240.*.*:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Average = 41ms

all in all ive only done a few registry tweeks, and messed with a few setting to increase my speed in minor amounts.

the only problem i have is when i do have a problem(everytime theres a brownout my modem goes fucking nuts its happened three times, and it always just blinks back on after a couple hours, days, weeks i never know, its an RCA modem) it takes them weeks to come out sometimes.

ide rate there service **** out of a possible *****

I have ATT broadband. Was great for a long time. Then all of a sudden this summer it got shitty. my pings would be at 1400ms even at night. They have gotten a lot better but at 115ms that still sucks. Tech came out and said no probs with my comp it was in the node. we have our own for the appartment complex i live in, everyone has the same problem. ATT says there is no problem with their shit. Finally got a guy after about 40 calls who knew what was really up. someone who could really examine the trace route and determine what it was. Was good for a month and now shitty again. With dial up I get 115ms sometimes. Not bad for viewing internet but it spikes a lot still leaving me unable to play any online games. oh well. I have a cel phone instead of home phone and i think qwest requires you to have a phone line with them to get DSL. so it would be more like 100 bucks a month considering all the extra taxes they add to your phone bills. They tax you for shit they are paying off from 30 years ago.

BBSC

I use Broadband Solutions. They have been great. My service is always working and I have extremely low latency (4ms to gateway and 35ms to major domains. Only $100 for 768k up/down (full duplex). They are certainly pricey, but I can't get DSL or Cable where I live and I couldn't ask for better service.
