Last meeting, and one previous, i used the built in mic on my laptop. It's kinda weak, but if it's next to the speaker, it gets a good recording. I do think we should have an improved, rat-shack setup that would allow for attenuation of the misc background noise and focus more on the speaker.

More visual content in people's presentations would be good. Props, slideshows, etc. I believe Adept was trying to use a projector in one of his previous talks. I can read someone's talk on the website and understand it, but if I sit in front of a computer and try to do it, I don't know where to begin.
Also, I think making copies of your talk is good and should be encouraged. I think everyone thinks that making copies of a talk to hand out at the meeting is pointless because the talk will be up on the website a week or so later. But handing out copies of your talk encourages people to read along and listen to what you're saying. Also, if they have a question, they can hold up their handout and ask "What did you mean by this right here?" Then everyone can take a look at their copy to know what the guy asking the question is talking about.

It would take a pretty damn hardcore projector to look very visible in that place. We should move the meetings, how about a library? (maybe at the U)
There are other reasons I don't like the mall as well, what do you people think about this idea? |

I dig the mall, as much as I hate to admit it. I'm a mallrat, through and through. The meetings have been at the ZCMI food court for almost two years now? It took a while for the meetings to really take off, but I think we've done it. I don't think changing the location will make it any better. That part is up to us.
Although, when the weather starts warming up, I vote we have a few meetings outside. Warwalking south temple and main was fun. Though we might get hassled for loitering. I dunno.

We have a pretty nice vocal mic, if someone has a recording device to plug it in to. It's not really the kind of thing you want to plug into line in on your computer, unless you ran it through a mixer or something first, and mine doesn't like Mic input, go figure.

Its been there for at least 2 and a half years. My first meeting was February 2000 I believe, as well as Grifter's, and it seemed like people had been going there for awhile. We had a supplementary meeting on 2/6/00 where we went begging on the streets for fun. We shouldn't go near south temple and main, it might make Grifter cry. Legally we can practice free speech there as the contract with the mormons included a public right-of-way. Rocky wants to keep it this way, the city council wants to give that right-of-way to the mormons. (maybe this stuff has already happened and I'm not with current events?) Rocky is a pimp, if I lived in SLC proper (and I may soon), I would vote for him. I don't agree with him on some mainstream issues but he seems to have the right attitude where it counts in SLC right now. |

I would be open to other locations as long as:
1: parking is available 2: we can be loud and loiter 3: it's a definitive improvement over the Mall 4: proximity to any food or beverage facilities is available A library would probably give us more room a quieter atmosphere and better facilities (read: restrooms), but we'd have to make sure that we can get it for that specified time every time. I doubt that food is allowed in the Library, especially in a classroom or meeting room. How loud we can be is of concern, but Libraries usually have those kind of rooms in less noise-sensitive areas. I think it's worth investigating any other options. |

Anyway, I'm pretty much cool with whatever happens as far as changing the 2600 meetings around a bit. I do think we need more visuals, and handouts. Also, although the mall is loud and distracting, I think it sort of gives the impression of openness about the meetings. If we get holed up in a library basement, it kinda seems like we're forming more of a clique where everybody present at the meeting is a regular. Granted, I'm pretty new to the meetings, but I really liked being welcomed by several of the oldies, and I think new people are what make part of the fun and excitement, provided they're not obnoxious assholes. |

I dunno, maybe a coffee shop or something would be cool to move the meeting to, the U library might be nice, but like manic hinted at, it might be hard to get people to come again.
The mall is sort of distracting, but in some ways that's good. After all it's nice to get food and then go listen to talks. Well, on the talks themselves visuals are cool and would help the listeners understand more. But how about group projects? People colaborating on one presentation could end up better than just one individual going at it. Well whatever, you are all fags anyways. |

meeting suggestions
Well personally, if i was still around (and I just may be again), I'd want demos. Have a couple people bring some laptops (like we sometimes do) and have a demo of cracking into some software, or setting up a firewall, or showing an experiment with a new program and let others get in and try it out or walk through what you've worked with. I wouldn't mind seeing a meeting where we just all sit down and make kind of a wish-list of what we want to get into at future meetings and have people offer to check those items out.

Great ideas Rude boy. I think that having a roundtable at the end of meetings where people say what they would like to learn about, and maybe have some people start writing talks and researching if necessary.
As for the moving of the meeting, I think that having it in a very open public is a necessity for attendance to stay the same, as I think people will be much less likely to go to a 2600 in a non-open, public forum. |

I think Proto's idea of group projects is great. This could help to get more people into doing talks. I'd like to see four or five people stand up at the meetings while giving a talk. Each taking turns talking about what they learned while working on the project. And if someone forgets to make an important point, someone else in the group can jump in and point it out.
Rudeboy expanded on what I was trying to get at. If I had a laptop, I would have brought it to the October meeting and demonstrated my talk. Fuck, I just lost my train of thought.
